Advice for starting out in recruitment!

Advice for starting out in recruitment!

Here is something I was told by a schoolteacher when I was just 15. I remember the lightbulb moment when he said THIS…

When you are young, do more than you are paid for and then when you are older, you will get paid more for what you do.

It has stuck with me all my working life and those who know me well will confirm.

If you are relatively new to recruitment, and want to earn the rewards enjoyed by your more experienced colleagues, here are 10 tips to help you on your journey:

DO

  • Make 15 calls when you were only asked to do 10
  • Put in an extra hour or two outside working hours to complete
  • Proactively offer to help a busy colleague when they are swamped
  • Look for the earning opportunity in every conversation
  • Keep your boss informed of all that you are doing over and above your role

DON’T

  • Watch the clock and be away one minute past your finish time
  • Have any client or candidate wait for you to take action
  • Keep things to yourself. Overshare and it will all come back to you
  • Promise to get back to someone and forget
  • EVER SAY, “It’s not my job”

If you follow these tips during the first 2-3 years of you recruitment journey, you will have more success and reach the earning potential of the role quicker. Then when you are more experienced, people will recognise this and pay you more for what you now do as a matter of course.

Do more now to get paid more later.
